CDC ranks Select Medical's reconditioning program in covid-19 long-term recovery

COVID-19 and Chronic Illness Recovery Program

CDC validates Recovery and Reconditioning program for post-COVID-19 conditions

The new surge of COVID-19 in early 2022 has pushed cases to almost 76 million in the United States, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Those numbers include people who also have acute or chronic health conditions. Some of the most common are emphysema, after-effects of flu and cardiovascular disease. The surge in COVID-19 cases in individuals already compromised by chronic health conditions spurred us to create our Recovery and Reconditioning program.

Recovery in many forms takes time and can put life on pause. Lingering COVID symptoms - "long COVID" - can further delay a return to health. This, along with chronic conditions, can leave you or a loved one less able to engage in daily life.

The delay in the return to normal life and routines can be scary or troubling to accept. Knowing that, we bring compassion to care through Recovery and Reconditioning. Our patients’ return to health is our highest goal.

Since the launch of our Recovery and Reconditioning Program in the spring of 2020, we have helped more than 2,000 people struggling with the long-term effects, or "COVID long haulers." More than 90 percent of those patients say they would recommend our program to a family member.

Our Recovery and Reconditioning program will help with:

  • Fatigue
  • Labored breathing (Dyspnea)
  • Weakness
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Joint pain (Arthralgia)
  • Muscle pain (Myalgia)
  • Anxiety/sleep disorders/depression caused by COVID-19 sequelae*

    * Treatment is exercise-based for lingering or long-term conditions (sequelae) from having the virus. Mental health sequelae from COVID-19 requires treatment by licensed mental health practitioners.

Why is therapy important?

Quality of life is important. Physical health keeps us active and able-bodied, spending time with family and contributing to the community. But illness or injury can change that. It can leave you or a loved one struggling to do even small things in daily living, lessening that quality.

Our Recovery and Reconditioning program helps patients return to activity and wellness. The focus is on rebuilding strength, endurance, mobility and flexibility.

Initially developed for post-COVID-19 recovery, the program extends to patients with non-COVID illnesses. Treatment is successful for COVID-like symptoms (shown above) not caused by coronavirus.

For post-COVID-19 patients, reconditioning recognizes the need for increased rehab like physical therapy. A collaborative study with the CDC cites post-COVID-19 rehabilitation findings of Select Medical, our parent company.

Our Recovery and Reconditioning program is in partnership with leading medical and clinical experts, including:

  • Physicians
  • Physiatrists
  • Infectious disease specialists
  • Physical and occupational therapists
  • Speech-language pathologists

Why our Recovery and Reconditioning program is right for you

Using evidence-informed guidelines, our licensed therapists design patient-specific plans to set and meet goals. In each session, we track vital signs and symptoms to ensure patient safety and progress.

We can treat you or your family member onsite in our centers. If preferred and/or necessary, evaluation, diagnosis and treatment is available with telerehab. The choice in treatment comes down to your physical ability and preference. In-person sessions follow CDC, state, community as well as our clinical guidelines for safety. Telerehab sessions are private, secure and adhere to HIPAA requirements.

Our goal is to ensure you’re comfortable in being an active partner in your treatment. Together, we will work to get you back to living a full, active life.
